Inspiration

Streaming, particularly on platforms like Twitch, has become a huge business. A co-worker of mine was telling me how much he enjoyed watching it, which completely baffled me. So I tried watching it, and while its not really my thing, I became fascinated by the systems streamers use while broadcasting live. Using apps like OBS Studio, streamers have broad abilities to switch show dynamics on the fly. I became interested in, not streaming but creating a system around OBS with what I could imagine Art Direction and Channel Brand Identity.

Scope

The goal was to create cards, clips and other assets that a single user could use during a live stream. I prominent challenge was to create not just assets but template where channel could easily pivot to new games. I also thought that an accompanying website, which a lot of streamers don’t have, would be a nice way of disseminating future shows and upcoming events.

The Kyle Coopers title sequence to Seven heavily inspired the overall direction of the System. Watching it I noticed that the book being created used different types of semi opaque paper like vellum and, if you watch closely, seemed to use printed transparencies. I decided that using transparency for the title page would make quite an impression on the viewer. The viewer is greeted with a field of random letters but by turning the page subtracts the useless data and reveals the hidden message within the code.

Editorial Design

I have always been fascinated with true stories of government espionage, techniques in tradecraft and modern U.S. military surveillance capabilities. This particular subject has always seemed to endlessly captivate me. This project, The System, was created with the love of this subject in mind and was directly inspired by Laura Poitras’s 2014 documentary, Citizen Four, which was based on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. It covers a wide array publicly known surveillance programs exposed in the wake of the Snowden leaks.

It really does surprise me how many streamers do not have a website. They are inexpensive, easy to maintain and provide a valuable conduit to your audience. A lot of streamers rely to heavily on cherry picked social media platforms to communicate with their audience.

Twixel uses Proxima Nova (weights: 100, 400, 600, 800) Lato works well small and is freely available for web and Print. Post project ease of availability (Google Fonts) was a consideration for choosing the typeface for ease of use in the future for the client.
