Visual Magazine
Inspiration
If Fast Company is the magazine for business and Photoshop user is the technical how to authority, then Visual is somewhere in the inspiration behind design. Visual is a annual publication that explores the ideas and philosophy behind visual communications. The project came at a time when I was becoming increasingly interested in the previous work of lesser known designers and artists, like Dave McKean and Gregory Crewdson. From this came a series I called, “Ten to Inspire”, which was a leaping off point for what would later become Visual Magazine.
Scope
Visual Magazine was a project that came about in a time where I became increasing fascinated with the process and visual philosophy behind respected creative in their prospective fields. This was a grab bag of creatives ranging from graphic designers like David Carson & Chip Kidd, to illustrators like Drew Struzan & Bill Sienkiewicz to photographers Hiroshi Sugimoto & Gregory Crewdson. Visual was design to fill in the gap between instruction deigin magazines like Photoshop User and the business of design like Fast Company. It is design to inspire the reader and create a platform where the creative in their respective fields can share their ideas behind design, most importantly their process.

I have always been fascinated with true stories of government espionage, techniques in tradecraft and modern U.S. military surveillance capabilities. This particular subject has always seemed to endlessly captivate me. This project, The System, was created with the love of this subject in mind and was directly inspired by Laura Poitras’s 2014 documentary, Citizen Four, which was based on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. It covers a wide array publicly known surveillance programs exposed in the wake of the Snowden leaks.
